I am curious about the overlay ability. In C1 I can place a PNG file template from an art director that allows me to compose my photo around type for a layout. Will this do that?
Yes - not sure if it supports png though. I tested it with a jpeg - easy enough to convert.
The app works well and seems relatively reliable on my new 100s II. But I prefer tethering in LR since I can make adjustments as I go. Even more I wish I could tether on location with my iPad. But i cannot get the app or LR or C1 mobile to work. I’d much prefer taking my iPad on location than dragging my heavier laptop since I’m often moving quickly from one location to another.
Yes, very dependent on what you want to do with it. Personally, I dislike LR and ipads have no functional colour management ;-)
Thank you Keith
Glad it's of interest.
Keith, your are a gift from God, thanks

Keith can you see why anyone would choose this over say a Canson Arches 88?

great info and tips, thanks 😁
Glad it was of some interest!
Hi Keith. A question about replacing ink cartridges, more specifically related to the Canon Pro 200 printer; is it safe to continue using the printer when you get the "Printer Ink May Have Run Out" message and just wait until the ink cartridge just physically runs out, or is it wise to change the ink as soon as you get the "Cartridge May Have Run Out Of Ink", alert? I've noticed that if I hold my nerve and don't immediately change the ink cartridge, I can get quite a few extra prints out of it. Should I stop ignoring the 'may have run out of ink' alert and change it immediately? With the price of ink these days I want to try and get every last drop of ink I can out of a cart!
I wait until the printer is 'sure' - however, I'll likely not print important prints on the 'dregs' ;-)
@@KeithCooper Thanks for the reply, Keith. A few days ago I was subjected to a scare story about not leaving it too late because "air pockets".
Yes - my leaving the low cart is partly to get any others closer to replacement, since replacing one often has a cascade effect and I've replaced several. This is one aspect of the 200/300 I don't much care for
I'm glad the 50mm TS-E works so well on the GFX, and it's great to see you have the GFX 100S II to test! It will be interesting to see how much of an improvement you think it is for your style of shooting. I'm thinking you may appreciate the improved IBIS and viewfinder the most, but I don't remember you saying if you use the EVF or not while shooting handheld. I haven't seen the 100S II in person, but have read and watched many reviews. Fuji claims 8 stops of image stabilization now, compared to 6 stops with version I, but apparently this is an "up to"/maximum result when used with their most effective IS stabilized lenses. Gordon Laing says in his Cameralabs video review on UA-cam, "NEW Fujifilm GFX 100S II REVIEW first looks," that he's found the 100S II to have 4.5 stops in his test, and found the 100S to have just 3 stops of compensation. So it's only about half of what they claim, but 4.5 stops is still a lot, and 1.5 stops improvement should be easily noticed, and could come in very useful for handheld shots! The dynamic range is said to have also been improved, but a company tested it (I forget their name), and found the improvement to only be in the new 80 ISO, compared to the DR in both cameras at 100 ISO. You wouldn't benefit from the improved autofocus tracking, so that wouldn't be a factor. One thing that I miss from the Canon 5DsR is being able to quickly scroll across recorded images at 100% resolution with the joystick, in order to check sharpness, etc. during shooting. It takes forever, for example, 20 seconds with the 100S to scroll from the left to the right side of an image in the lcd. The 5DsR was lightning fast in comparison. Because the 100S II has a faster processor, I'm wondering if scrolling across recorded images is now much faster. I haven't seen any reviewers mention this, but would think a lot of photographers check their images in the field, to make sure of focus, etc., but maybe not, since the reviewers never mentioned how tedious this is with the 100S. It's nice to see they dropped the price by $1,000! FUJI is impressive! Tony Northrup just did a video showing how Nikon hamstrung their Z6 III's dynamic range a full stop in order to use a lot of the pixels to improve autofocus instead of capturing max light for DR. The GFX cameras may have 2 more stops of DR! I hope FUJI always puts image quality for stills above autofocus speed and video capability.
Actually, virtually no significant improvement [for myself] - yes, the IS might be a tad better and the viewfinder a bit sharper. I'll leave detailed testing to others, but I certainly wouldn't consider any of it a reason to update [YMMV]. Indeed, it makes a used mk1 100S even more enticing for the curious ;-) I only ever use the EVF when handheld - my eyesight makes the screen on the back about as useless as most phones are to me. That and I have not spent years getting a good stance for hand held just to hold the camera out in front of me to see the screen... ;-) If the DR is better, then my casual testing hasn't shown it in any meaningful way - I only have the mk2 here for a while though, so a rather limited set of testing in this case.
For sublimation is better 18100 or 8550 ?
No idea - not something I've ever tested. I don't test non standard ink setups
I need a good printer for printing mostly waterslide decals. So it means glossy paper. But at the same time I need the inks to be water resistant. Which one would you recommend? Dye based or Pigment based printers?
Neither, if you are looking at the sort of printers and inks I test. Likely needs specialist inks and media
Do you see any difference between the 45 mm TS & 50 mm TS on a Fuji GFX sensor?
I don't have a TS-E45 here, however from my testing of the two previously [see my detailed written reviews], the TS-E50 is a distinctly better lens - bigger image circle and much less CA and distortion. At full shift there is relatively little vignetting on the 50 on the GFX. The TS-E45 wasn't an L lens - the differences were noticeable on my 5Ds and I would expect them to be even more so on the GFX100S. Some initial tests with the 50 on the 100S are very promising - especially when I had a go with the GFX set to a square crop ~75MP and a good field of view. I'll have plenty of examples for an article soon, and do a video to go with it. The only 'better' aspect of the TS-E45 is in the increased focus throw. The 50 needs careful focus at 100MP and it's easier with more focus ring throw at the infinity end - that and the 50 focuses past infinity [which is useful]
@@KeithCooper thanks for your input. I own the 4 Nikon TS lenses and after switching to Fuji GFX bodies, I found that the Nikon 45 mm is the lens I use it most on that sensor size, whereas the 24 mm is the 2nd best. I wish my 24 mm would be vignette free than it is my 19 mm f4 but I think it is a matter of size. I not only use shift but also tilt mostly on both lenses, to extend depth of field on my landscape shots, so I get the most of these lenses on my compositions. I would love to buy the new Gf 30 mm f5.6 but it is out of stock and it seems it will continue off stock for a long time.
Yes, the PC-E lenses do suffer in some respects from being in the narrow F mount, but I recall the PC-E45 was good, but not up to the TS-E50
@@KeithCooper yes, Canon TS lenses have the advantage to the Nikon siblings because of their bigger mount size, which is better to prevent vignette issues. Another disadvantage of the Nikon TS lenses, except the 19 mm f4, is that the tilt button comes at 90 degree of the shift one, so in order to align both buttons the lens has to come back to Nikon service for factory rotation , a service that cost me USD 150, plus tax, per each lens, at Nikon USA in NY.
@@KeithCooper Every Canon EF and non-Canon EF mount lenses that I've tried on the GFX 100S with adapter show no vignetting in square, "1:1 Large" (33x33mm), including fisheyes - and in "65:24 Large" XPan panos (44mm wide). [For some very wide angle lenses, the petal shaped hood has to be cut off.] And Fuji's full, "Large" crops can be used to frame the exact composition in these chosen aspect ratios while shooting.
Hi Keith. I have a question about the P900 : is it possible to print panoramic pictures without the paper roll option. I'd like to print some from time to time but not that often that I need paper rolls. Thanks for your answer.
Yes, it is, but I don't have a limit on the size I'm afraid. I'd suggest asking on the printing forum at DPReview
@@KeithCooper Hi Keith, thank you for the answer. I just wanted to know if panoramic were possible without the roll paper device. I'm still not sure what to buy, Canon Pro 1000 (which is a bit old perhaps ?) or Epson P900, I try to compare.
The 1000 is indeed a bit old - likely to be available for at least a few months more...
@@KeithCooper Yes, but it's a good printer, may be we could get it for a good price
Hi Keith, I recently purchesed my first printer for printing photographs. I have much darkroom experience but am so excited with my EPSON P900. I learned a lot from your channel. I highly appreciate. I did the monitor calibration using calibrate display pro, I uploaded all necessary ICC profiles. I started with Hahnemühle papers. What happened with my first prints is really interesting; I accidentally print the RAW format version of the same picture and I ended up getting most correct looking colors. All my other prints were .tif They looked OK until I see the print from RAW version. Something is off with the .tif prints. How is this possible? What could have possibly gone wrong?
Glad to have helped! But... What software? What system? I always suggest initially printing with Epson Print Layout, a basic Epson paper, and a known test image - just to make sure things are working OK. Starting with a third party paper [no matter how good] is, I'd suggest, not optimal - how can you tell if stuff is working? Just too many variables.... so, lots of things could 'go wrong' ;-) See the main review. www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-sc-p900-printer-review/
@KeithCooper Thank you for getting back to me, Keith. Since I didn't know what info necessary to ask it properly, I just didn't want to load my question with useless info. That's why it had to be a stupid question. I use Lightroom to print on my MacBook Pro (M2) with the most recent Sonoma 14.5 I have ViewSonic monitor but I guess it has nothing to do with it. About the paper, this is what I could find at the local store. I will watch your review again. Thanks...
BTW It's the written review, not the video. The detail is always in my written stuff - the videos are supplements ;-)
I thought you were talking about the 21 min. video! This review is amazing! I need to take my time to do my homework on the review. Thanks again.
I had one of these in the 1980s. I used it for botanical work. Eventually the bolt broke and i threw it out. Just recently i came across one being thrown out at work. It has a missing foot which i 3d printed a replacement. Imagine telling me 40 years ago that I'd be 3d printing parts! Anyhow chuffed to have one again. They are loke a set of bagpipes to work with. Trick i found was to grasp centre foot between your feet when placing the other feet. I saw one in cameratiks in Edinburgh the other day if anyone wants one!
Thanks - it's given me excellent service for lots of shots in factories and the like, 'inside' equipment, where the 'all over the place' legs have helped
Great point about printing large photos on gloss showing bigger reflections! I would've never thought of that but it makes perfect sense.
Thanks
I already had the 2D and wanted a cheap second body, so bought a used 1D II. I found it unusable by comparison. Fortunately the store took it back and I bought a 2D.
Definitions of unusable do vary widely, and depend a lot on what you want to do ;-) It's the lens choice which most affects my own work, but I still reckon the X1D mk2 is not a bad camera - YMMV ;-)
In an engineer by trade, and I can tell you the grease on the rails is either PTFE or Silicone based in the majority of cases. If you’ve accidentally cleaned the grease off and there’s plastic parts there (very likely), you should replace it with the same. Do not use regular greases as many of them will attack the plastic parts.
Good point.
Are you not aware of tilt-shift adapters?
Strangely enough - yes, and they are mentioned in the video :-) The video is about what such lenses can do [adapted or not] as well as pointing out some of the things peopke think they will do but won't...
Hello Keith. It would be nice to compare the quality of the Canon ts-e 50mm with the Fujinon GF45 f/2.8. My comparison of Canon ts-e24 f/3.5 mark2 with Fujinon GF23 f/4. Canon has chromatic aberration. At medium and close distances it gives quality for 100 megapixels; closer to infinity, the resolution of the optics is insufficient for 100 megapixels. Better (linear) stretching to the edges, this makes the image better, the wide-angle effect is less noticeable. Fujinon GF23 f/4 is optically perfect, no chromatic aberrations. I don't like its strong contrast. And a very noticeable (nonlinear) stretching to the edges of the image along the long side. I had not noticed this before on other wide-angle lenses and thought it was due to the size of the sensor. I had to sell the Fujinon GF23; I stopped using it after buying the Canon ts-e24. (Google Translater). Eduard.
Nice, but not likely for testing from me - I rarely ever do comparisons between single examples of a lens, but I don't have a 45mm and I got the TS-E50 because it is tilt/shift. Similarly, the Fuji 23mm is very nice [I've looked at it] but once again not relevant for any of my photography. I have a TS-E24 and it works just fine ;-)
@@KeithCooper Yes, that’s right, it’s more universal. For us, who are not picky about autofocus, this is a very worthy replacement from Canon. And they have the same price. If only Fujifilm would think about the price. Now I’m faced with choosing a fixed long lens for GFX, and again in favor of Canon. The small aperture GF TS 30/5,6. $$$$s that won't don't pass into aperture make Fujifilm tilt-shift lenses uncompetitive. We have them on sale.
Is there much, if any, difference between using the suggested media setting for a 3rd party paper or creating a custom one specifically for it ?
Having profiled a lot of papers on a variety of printers, I'd say not that often ;-) The problem is that 'custom' media settings don't actually allow you to adjust much. Add to that the utter lack of info from the printer makers about the real differences between media settings, and much of it is guess work. This has been part of my 'feedback' to Canon and Epson for so long that I really ought to have some text ready to cut and paste... :-( The only times where I would make custom one are where there is quite a disparity between the media setting used and some physical characteristics of the paper, so on a larger printer, I might find that a 'lustre paper' setting works for profiling, but that native paper is much thinner than my media [glossy canvas springs to mind]. So, I might want to up the thickness [head height] and maybe change the paper vacuum or other physical settings. From a usability POV, a custom setting may also make it easier for less skilled operators to tend machines - but I don't run a print business...
@@KeithCooper Thanks Keith, it was something i had wondered about for a while. Seeing various people mention custom media setting for different 3rd party papers but not a whole lot of information as to what difference it was making from using the suggested ones. I suppose without knowing exactly what the default setting is doing its difficult to compare them.
Yes - I've written stuff about media settings over the years. Sometimes useful to experiment when profiling a new paper, but actually worth doing? Not that often... I've seen people doing it, because they want 'something' - this is 'something', so they do it... ;-)
Nice, I bit the bullet and found a new copy last October. Your review was one of the deciding factors, one I kept going back to when lusting over it 😅 In any case, eventually going to Fuji medium format is also why I haven't hesitated investing in these lenses. Glad to see you're using them in the exact scenario of medium format I want eventually!
Thanks - just going out to test the 50mm a bit. Well, at least I will when the rain stops... ;-)
please give a summary of your finding about the sheer optical quality at the beginning... the rest is so much blabla; as a fan of the lenses we all know about that stuff....
I'd normally say jump forward then, or read the written article as well... www.northlight-images.co.uk/fujifilm-gf-110mm-ts-f-5-6-review/ However I just noticed that I'd not included the article link in the note - my apologies. My videos are usually supplements to the written articles, not the other way round. Also, I always assume that a not insignificant part of the audience for videos is asking why you would use such a lens...
@@KeithCooper I am not so sure -- and I beg your pardon if my comment eventually was too offensive-(... I would prefer a clear differenciation between fundamental stuff and precise gear reviews ... thank you an for your engagement and efforts
Thanks for replying - my videos are always aimed at a much wider audience than the written stuff, and I've long avoided overly 'technical' lens reviews since I don't have the equipment [and multiple copies of lenses required] for reviews like those by lensrentals, which are what I consider 'proper' technical reviews ;-)
@@KeithCooperin the end: what is the real advantage of the hyper expensive and very slow 110 5.6 vs the Canon ts e lenses? Cornered Sharon? better / lower field future
I've not the Canon ones to test, but from my testing on a 5Ds, they [90 and 135] were exceedingly good, and should have the coverage. At 2.8/4 they might also be more useful in some respects . It needs someone with proper lens testing equipment to find how good the 110 is. I was testing the TS-E50 on my GFX yesterday and it is stunning, with only a tiny bit of vignetting at full diagonal shift on the GFX, very sharp, contrasty and a bit of easily correctable CA. If I wanted longer T/S I think I'd buy a used 90 and 135 for the cost of the 110mm TS ;-)
Thanks, But this did not help with the Canon TS6300 on Mac 14 only shows an airprint driver
It could be that there is no proper Mac driver Colour management is effectively broken on Macs for many smaller Canon printers I managed a workaround for a G5/650, but it's not an approach many could take www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-g550-printer-review/
Can toilet bowl cleaner be used on those crappy Epson printers? 😄 thanks for the article as it reminded me to clean my Canon printer.
No more than you should use it for cleaning your hands Epson/Canon - little difference in reality
I use Fuji Acquire with the Lightroom. Only issue is that you need an X-T1 model or up to make it function. The lowly modern X-T30 does not tether.
Yes - support thins out as you go down the line.
@@KeithCooper considering it's age the X-T1 is still a stellar camera for doing tether or other types of photography. Thanks Keith for monitoring the pulse of new developments. I will give this new Fuji app a try this weekend and if it can be used to remotely control the camera that would be very sweet indeed.
Yes, I've been spoilt in some respects, in that every Canon DSLR I've used in the past has had a version of EOS Utility providing tethering [for ~20 years]. I didn't get the GFX for that, but when I did try it I was a bit taken aback by the difficulties - hopefully fixed.
Agree about the scourge of Dark Mode and low contrast UI's. 😀 Interestingly, I always edit with a white border because if I don't I find I lose my "white" reference, ie what is actually white rather than "relatively white" compared to the rest of the image.
Thanks Yes - a good point. Having a stable white point is important.
Just got the printer. prints nicely but I cannot save settings in Lightroom on my Macbook Pro. Have to pick rear tray, glossy paper and best quality every single time. Also dont' see a choice for color management by Lightroom.
Have you accidentally installed the airprint driver? Test with Epson Print Layout See the notes on this in my main written stuff www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/
@@KeithCooper It's possible. I will have to go through a learning process as I am not familiar with Apple printing. But I am super happy with the printer. Prints come out great. They look like what I have on the computer and adjusting in Lightroom works in predictable ways, totally unlike cheap printers I have used in the past.
@@KeithCooper Thanks so much, it was on Airprint. I found your video on this problem. I removed printer, redownloaded Mac 14.x and in Add Printer it said Use EPSON ET-8550 Series. But that installed Airprint driver 3.0 again. Next time I went to Select Software and picked EPSON ET-8550 Series and this time it installed correct driver 13.05. I now see that is what the instructions say but I think it's bad programming to use the same name for different things. Thanks again, I will be watching all your videos on this printer!
I only see one reason to go back to film from time to time: I still like what that old grain of high ISO B&W film brings to some photos. Perhaps it can be got digitally, but I haven't learnt yet... Or perhaps it is just a bit of nostalgia.
Yes, there is that. I've seen some pretty impressive grain simulations though. I used DxO Film Pack to create some source patches for 'repairing' some scanned negs and with care the match was very good.
@@KeithCooper Thanks for the reference; I will give a try to DXO when I have the time. Anyway, as I go back to B&W film only from time to time, I think for the same money I will keep on exercising "full film process nostalgia". By the way, in my view, this is also the only reason why it can make sense to shoot film and then scan negatives.
hi sir i bought epson l8180 printer yesterday. I use mac mini (Ventura 13.3). Installed the Epson driver and took a print. But the color is less. I can't find advanced settings option in printer settings. So can't select adobe rgb profile. Can't find a solution for this on UA-cam. Sir have Epson l8180 printer. Does it have advanced setting option?
look further! - it's likely you have installed the AirPrint driver by mistake. There is no reason to select A98 as a profile when printing anyway, but that's a whole different issue.. ;-)
@@KeithCooper ok sir When you leave the print, select the photoshop manage color option and enter the color profile as the printer profile to get the best color print.
Yes. Easiest way to avoid AirPrint the driver is to delete the current one and go to Epson.sn and do a full driver install, BUT read the instructions carefully.
It's July 2024, and I've just viewed this video, which makes me curious to know whether you're still shooting the 5 Ds? Another question came to mind when you said you were shooting the 5 Ds for several years which is, why did you select the 5 Ds and not the 5 Dsr? I personally am shooting the EOS R (30.2 MP) body and have previously shot the 5 Dsr. However, now that I've become more serious about my architecture photography, I'm very seriously considering going back to the 5 Dsr, although I'm also considering the 5 Ds, which is part of my curiosity about why you selected to use a 5 Ds. I've viewed several of your videos and have always appreciated your analyses and found your videos highly informative. Thanks in advance for your anticipated reply.
Last year I moved to the GFX100S, giving me ~60MP and better pics from the crop mode. I've adapters for my TS-E24/17/90 all of which work in varying degrees with the full 33x44 medium format 100MP. Indeed I've just [yesterday] bought a TS-E50mm [video tomorrow] for both crop and non-crop use [AVR photography for the 35mm crop] Gives me ~40mm equiv on the GFX and goes well with the Fujifilm 30mm TS [~24mm equiv] I still use the 5Ds for some macro and close-up work - it just works. The 5DS R - a masterpiece of Canon marketing... ;-) A friend came up, with a 5DS R and TS-E50mm - we photographed some buildings and stuff with my camera and his... Afterwards, his comment was that he could have saved £200 and not noticed the difference See here www.northlight-images.co.uk/5ds-or-5ds-r-worth-the-extra-cost/ Remember that I only started the videos in mid 2020, after someone from Canon twisted my arm ;-) My written articles go back over 20 years. See here too for my proper [i.e. written] look at the R5 - this video was one of my very early ones! ;-) www.northlight-images.co.uk/looking-at-the-canon-r5-camera/
thanks. keep more coming on cleaning. i learn more each time.
Thanks - I have covered most aspects... but if you think of anything, let me know!
Wandering around searching for a good printer found myself ending up in a relaxed but very educational lecture in composition as useful bycatch. Thanks!
Thanks - glad it was of interest
I used to run an Epson Express centre (fixing consumer grade printers) , the service manuals went into quite good depth on what to grease / clean and not!! And yes youre spot on. One thing to note is that if grease does somehow find its way onto the optical encoder strip, it does need cleaning (very carefully) as it will cause serious misalignment on bi-directional prints. I never figured out how it got there, but it did happen on occasion.
Thanks - a good tip
Thanks for all your very helpful videos. I'm just beginning to get "up to speed with" with printing with your videos. Do you consider the Epson ET-8550 as being as good at printing and image preservation inks as this Canon Pro 200?
Print quality - with the right paper choices, yes, and some [where the pigment black is in the mix] better Longevity - I simply don't have any data, but I'd say similar
Can you adjust the colour profiles without a computer? I only have an iPad and iPhone.
No, I'm afraid not With phones/ipads, good colour is a bit of a lottery - they essentially have no functional colour management in this respect
Would love If you could do a comparison of the old gfx 100s and the 2 version for prints/printing? Thank you!!!
Looking at images on screen, I can see no significant difference - on print, there would be even less ;-) The viewfinder is nicer, but other changes [for the sort of work I do] are negligible. There are differences obviously, but fundamentally it's the same sensor and I rarely use autofocus ;-)
Hi Keith, thanks for your work on this cheap printer. I have a question: How did you get equal border size on each side of your print? Mine has always a difference of a few millimeters..
Thanks - You'll need to check the main [i.e. written] review and videos to see how I printed, it was quite a while ago, but didn't take any specific measures IIRC www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-g550-printer-review/
Thanks!
Thanks!
Good 1 Keith
Thanks
Thanks for the excellent info, Keith!
Thanks
Makes sense, it is a machine after all. Have you ever had to re-grease any components?
No, but I've never been a printer user at commercial volumes of print
Thanks as ever:)
Thanks
Thanks for the video Keith. I was wondering what else is in the box besides the holograms ?
The cut sheets of paper [deckle edged]
"That metal bar" in... heh... "affordable" printers, looks like you think about them wrongly, and you screw up the print heads precision for life. What i hate more than those, is the freely hanging little plastic strip with the bar patterns to register the exact head movement. It's like they put these things upfront deliberately so you can keep buying if you screw anything up.
Yes, if you don't know why you need to clean or touch a bit, best to leave alone. I've seen many a printer broken by assorted incompetence/curiosity ;-)
Good tips. Thanks
Thanks
I always put a blanket or something to cover my p5000 when I am not using it. For avoid dust. Is there important you think. A friend told me to take out the cartridges and shake them a bit. Perhaps not often, but anyway. Is these two ideas preferable? Take care, Göran in Latvia
I often keep a stack of scrap/test prints on top to keep out dust For shaking the carts I have a twice yearly diary reminder to take them out and give a gentle shake to
@@KeithCooper thanks for this response.
The "plastic band" is the head drive belt 🤣
Yes - I'm trying to keep it general and not specific to any one printer. The video is not really aimed at those wishing to know how a printer works ;-)
Great reply to that idiot trying to show you up Keith. Most people that have printers would just see it as a plastic belt. Thank you for keeping things simple. It's much appreciated be the majority of us. Keep producing these informative and very useful videos.@KeithCooper
If you weigh a dead empty cartridge then you can weigh any cartridge and know how much the ink is in it.
Yes - I've pulled them apart in some reviews, just to show what empty means...
Hi, do you have an idea of how many prints you can typically get in A3 format (approximately) with the initial set of cartridges?
Sorry - no. The printer was lent to me already iniitialised
Super interesting:)
Thanks - fixes many issues I had with the GFX
